Diplomatic protocol is the system of rules, conventions, customs, and practices governing official interaction between states, diplomatic missions, international organizations, and public authorities. It covers matters such as accreditation, precedence, forms of address, ceremonies, official visits, flags, seating, credentials, and the formal handling of diplomatic communication.
Protocol is sometimes reduced to etiquette, but its institutional role is broader. Small procedural details can acquire political meaning when relationships are sensitive. Digital invitations, virtual ceremonies, online credentials, public event streams, and rapidly circulating images have created new ways for protocol decisions or mistakes to become visible internationally.
