Aide-mémoire

An aide-mémoire is a written summary of a diplomatic conversation or representation, provided to preserve the main points for subsequent reference.

Context

In U.S. diplomatic practice it commonly summarizes an informal diplomatic interview and may be handed to an ambassador or representative; formats vary between services.

Why it matters for foreign affairs

It reduces ambiguity about what was communicated, enabling headquarters and missions to maintain an accurate record of positions and requested follow-up.

Where it appears in practice

Following a meeting with foreign officials, an embassy representative leaves an aide-mémoire setting out the principal arguments discussed.

Clarification

Not a synonym for every memorandum or an automatic agreement.
