AI Agents
AI agents are AI systems designed to pursue goals, complete tasks, interact with digital tools, make decisions within defined limits, and operate with varying degrees of autonomy. In foreign affairs, AI agents may assist with research, monitoring, workflow support, drafting, translation, triage, or internal coordination.
AI agents can improve speed and productivity, but they also introduce risks because they may act across systems, access data, trigger workflows, or make recommendations that affect institutional decisions. Ministries need clear rules for access, oversight, auditability, security, and accountability before agentic systems are used in sensitive environments.
It appears in AI-assisted research, automated monitoring, briefing workflows, consular triage, document processing, scheduling, knowledge management, data analysis, and internal support systems. It may also appear in vendor platforms that connect AI to email, databases, calendars, communication tools, or external information sources.
