Geopolitical Technology
Geopolitical technology refers to technologies whose development, control, standards, supply chains, infrastructure, or use have significant implications for power, security, sovereignty, economic leverage, and international influence. It includes AI, semiconductors, cloud infrastructure, cyber capabilities, digital identity, data systems, satellites, quantum technologies, and critical platforms.
Technology is now a central field of geopolitical competition. Decisions about infrastructure, standards, vendors, data, and AI can affect alliances, dependency, security, trade, and strategic autonomy. Foreign ministries need to understand technology not only as innovation, but as power.
It appears in technology diplomacy, export controls, sanctions, digital infrastructure partnerships, AI governance, semiconductor strategy, cybersecurity, standards negotiations, cloud sovereignty, digital public infrastructure, and diplomatic engagement with technology companies.
