Desk Officer
A desk officer is an official responsible for following relations with a particular country, geographical area or thematic portfolio within a foreign ministry or another government foreign-affairs unit.
Organizational models and titles differ; in the U.S. Department of State, the expression commonly refers to an officer overseeing a country or group of countries in a regional bureau.
The role connects embassy reporting, policy analysis, interagency coordination and instructions to missions.
A country desk reviews an embassy report, coordinates clearance across relevant offices and briefs decision-makers on the implications.
Country desk vs thematic desk may differ by ministry; no universal job description.
