Cartographic Aggression

Cartographic aggression is a critical term used to describe the presentation or dissemination of maps that assert disputed territorial claims, particularly when such representations are perceived as attempts to normalize or reinforce claims to sovereignty.

Term type · Contested or critical characterization
Context

Maps can play a significant role in territorial disputes, diplomatic protests and competing narratives of sovereignty. However, the publication of a map does not, by itself, establish lawful title to disputed territory.

Where it appears in practice

Pakistan's publication of a new political map in August 2020, amid its dispute with India, has been examined in academic literature through the concept of cartographic aggression.
